What are Headaches and what causes them?
A headache is a pain in the head occurring above they eyes or ears, behind the head (occipital), or at the back of the upper neck. Like chest or back pain, headaches have many causes.
All types of headaches are considered primary or secondary. The types of primary headaches are migraines, tension headaches and cluster headaches. Secondary headaches are the result of other diseases.
The most common type of headache is the Tension Headache, which up to about 90% of adults suffer from. Women commonly suffer more from Tension Headaches then men.
The second most common type of headache are Migraine Headaches. It is estimated that 28 million people in the US have migraines, which includes children. After puberty, women suffer more commonly with migraines then men. Migraines often are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed as tension or sinus headaches.
Cluster headaches, affecting mainly men ages 28-30 years old, are much more rare but are an important type of primary headache.
Secondary headaches can result from many types of serious conditions, like brain tumors, strokes, and meningitis, to less serious conditions like caffeine withdrawal and medications. However, we have found that headaches are VERY often caused by conditions in the cervical spine (neck area).
How Can WellnessOne Help Your Headaches?
Because there are different types and causes of headaches, WellnessOne of Redding has several approaches to treating them. In cases where we determine that the headaches are stemming from a condition in the cervical spine, chiropractic adjustments and therapies are usually shown to provide much relief and actually correct the condition that causes the headaches. During the course of the chiropractic care, massage therapy has been proven very effective in promoting relaxation and reducing the inflammation of the soft tissue, and therefore speeding up the process of healing.
In both the case that the cause of the headaches is spinal related and not, acupuncture works very well to block the pain and often times eliminate the problem of headaches of all types.
WellnessOne of Redding is Northern California's most comprehensive headache care center.
